5 Simple Content Creation Mistakes to Avoid for Beginners
Yo, what’s up, people? I Mihir Arora is back again with some gyaan ki baatein. I know most of you don’t like to read blogs. so chill, I have kept it way simple for you. So, being a content creator, I have faced many issues in the starting phase of my journey. And yes, I made a few mistakes in my content creation journey, and I learned and reached where I am right now.
So today, we will talk about the top 5 simple mistakes new content creators make and how you can easily avoid them.
Mistake #1: Looking at What Everyone Else is Doing (Don’t!)
Imagine you’re learning to ride a bike. You wouldn’t keep looking at the super-fast cyclists zooming by and feel bad about your wobbly start, right? It’s the same with making content.
If you keep looking at others, you will feel overwhelmed every time because comparing yourself with other creators is a killer. You will never be able to grow if you keep doing these things.
When you’re new, it’s easy to see creators in India with tons of followers and amazing videos and think, “I’ll never be that good.” But guess what? They all started somewhere! They had their own wobbly starts, too.
Why it’s a bad idea to compare:
- It makes you feel down: Seeing others’ success can make you feel like you’re not good enough, even when you’re just beginning.
- You might copy them: If you focus too much on others, you might try to be exactly like them instead of being yourself. (Never do this)
- You stop being creative: Worrying about what’s popular stops you from trying your own cool ideas.
What to do instead:
- Remember why you started: What made you want to create content in the first place? Focus on that feeling.
- See how far YOU’VE come: Look back at your first try. See how much you’ve already learned! That’s progress.
- Learn from others, but be YOU: Watch successful creators get ideas, but always put your own spin on things. What makes you different?
- Your journey is YOUR journey: Everyone grows at their own speed. Focus on getting better yourself, not on being better than someone else right now.
Mistake #2: Thinking Only About Money Right Away
Okay, I know most of you will say we are working for money in the end. Yes, it’s correct, but it’s for the end. Do not think about money at the start.
Yes, making money from your videos or posts sounds great! But if you are just making content for the sake of money, then maybe it is a problem.
Why just wanting money is a mistake at the start:
- Your content might not be good: If you just try to make the content you think will get views and money, then you might not actually enjoy making it. And you will start feeling like a. burden.
- You might give up easily: If the money doesn’t come quickly (and it usually doesn’t at first), you might get discouraged and stop.
- People want real connections: Viewers in India want to connect with creators who are real and who care about what they’re sharing, not just making money.
What to do instead:
- Create what you love: Talk about things you’re interested in. Your excitement will show! (Work for passion, not money)
- Try to help people: Can you teach something? Make someone laugh? Share something useful? That’s what people like.
- Be patient: Building an amazing audience and earning money will take time. So, it’s always better to focus on your content quality first.
- Money can come later: Once you have good content and people who like it, you can start thinking about ways to earn money.
Mistake #3: Spending Too Much Money at the Beginning
I started my content creation journey with a 150 rupee mic. Yes, I never had a good laptop, a good camera phone or any other accessories.
But when you see fancy videos or blogs, you might think you need expensive cameras and software right away. But that’s usually not true, especially when you’re just starting out in content creation.
Why spending a lot of money early is a bad idea:
- You might waste money: What if you don’t even enjoy making content after a few tries? All the money is indirectly wasted on everything you buy and is of no use now.
- You don’t need fancy stuff to start: Your phone camera is probably good enough! There are also lots of free apps for editing.
- Focus on learning first: It’s more important to learn how to make good content than to have the best equipment.
What to do instead:
- Use what you have: Start with your phone, your computer – whatever you already own.
- Try free tools: There are many free apps and software for editing videos and photos. Use them!
- Learn the basics first: Understand lighting, sound (even with your phone!), and how to edit simply.
- Upgrade later if you need to: Once you’re serious and you know what you need, you can think about buying better equipment.
I would say invest in your skills and learnings first. If you have them, then for sure, no one can stop money from coming to you.
Mistake #4: Not Being Regular (Being Inconsistent)
Consistency is the key to success in content creation. And if you are a beginner, then being consistent only will help you to go.
Now, just imagine your favourite snack shop was open one day, closed the next, and then opened again a week later. You’d probably stop going, right? It’s similar to your content. If you post videos or blogs whenever you feel like it, people will forget about you.
Why being inconsistent hurts you:
- People forget you: The internet moves fast. If you’re not showing up regularly, people will find other creators to follow.
- They don’t know when to expect you: If you don’t have a schedule, your audience won’t know when to look for your new stuff.
- It’s harder to grow: Platforms like YouTube and Instagram like creators who post regularly. It shows you’re serious.
What to do instead:
- Make a simple plan: Just decide when to post; consistency doesn’t mean to post daily. It’s posting regularly when planned.
- Plan your content ahead: You will always procrastinate when you plan everything on the same day to post. I bet it isn’t easy to grow in this case. Keep a buffer content with you always.
- Tell your audience when to expect new things: Keep posting stories, polls, etc, for your audience and let them guess or know your schedule.
- Even small, regular updates help: If you can’t make a full video or blog post, even a quick update on social media keeps people engaged.
Mistake #5: Just Copying What Others Do (Be Original!)
At the beginning of content creation, It is okay to copy ideas from other creators to create content. But it will only be for your initial days.
Because copying their videos or blog posts word-for-word isn’t a good idea.
Why just copying is a problem:
- You don’t stand out: Everyone is on social media, and it takes a second for it to go viral. If, by chance, anyone points out that you copied it, Your brand image will be affected.
- It doesn’t feel real: People can tell when you’re not being yourself.
- It can cause problems: Copying someone else’s work without giving credit is not okay.
What to do instead:
- Get inspired, don’t copy: Ideas can be copied, but content should not. Try to be creative and execute the content in your own way.
- Share your own thoughts and feelings: What do you think about the topic? What are your experiences?
- Find your own style: Experiment with how you talk, how you edit, how you write. What makes you, you?
- Give credit where it’s due: If you use someone else’s idea or work, make sure to mention them.
