So what’s up, everyone? Mihir Arora is back here. Maybe most of you know about me; I was extremely introverted in my school and college days. Even the school stage was one of the horror places that I made in my mind, But I fought my fear and became a tech content creator and a public speaker. And I will share some public speaking tips with you too

The best part is that I got multiple opportunities to speak at top universities. I’m still buzzing from the incredible experience of speaking at the Under 25 Summit at IIT Roorkee. Yes, It was a dream come true, especially for someone who used to get anxious while just ordering a corn pizza at Domino.

But standing on that stage, I realized how far I’d come. This journey from an introvert terrified of public speaking to a speaker at a prestigious institution wasn’t easy. It was filled with fear, anxiety, and a lot of learning.

And I want to say Yes, I was a bit nervous and anxious even on stage, but I used some public speaking tips that I learned in this journey.

Today, I want to share my story and offer practical public speaking tips for introverts in India so you can also overcome your stage fear and find your voice.

1. The “Are You Serious?” Moment:

The invitation to speak at IIT Roorkee felt surreal. My first thought was, “You got this opportunity and you can’t go back, You have to face it now or regret later” As an introvert, public speaking was my ultimate fear. But a tiny voice inside me said, “You can kill it, Mihir.

So, in this case, opportunities come and go, and everything is in your hands to use for your growth or pass on to someone else. No one deserves anything; it’s just your experience that makes you more confident.

 

2. The Introvert’s Struggle: Public Speaking Anxiety in India:

Let’s face it: for introverts in India, public speaking can be a nightmare. The thought of standing before a crowd, all eyes on you, triggers intense anxiety. My mind would flood with worst-case scenarios: “What if I forget everything? What if they judge me?”

If it is your first time, you had better prepare before stepping on the stage. Yes, things can go up and down. But for the first time, you are here to overcome your fear, not to teach anyone anything.

And yes, people will judge you; you also did this at some point in time, right? But you don’t remember after you step out of the auditorium. So stop thinking about what people will say or react. Just be yourself and speak freely.

 

3. My First Public Speaking Catastrophe (And the Lesson Learned):

My first real public speaking experience was at a student event at Delhi University. I was a nervous wreck. However, the things that gave me confidence were my practice and knowledge. Yes, I forgot a few things in between, but I still managed to provide some learnings and had a great session.

So, if you forget something or your mind goes blank, what should you do in this situation?

  • Simple, calm yourself, take 5 secs, think and then start speaking.
  • Do not rush to finish the speech as soon as possible; a hurry can create a problem for you.

4. The Gradual Ascent: Building Confidence Step by Step:

To become a confident public speaker in India, I knew I had to face my fears. I started small:

  1. Mirror Practice: Practicing in front of the mirror helped me control my posture and voice.
  2. Small Group Talks: I volunteered to speak at workshops and meetups.
  3. Online Courses: I enrolled in online courses to improve my public speaking skills.
  4. TED Talks: I studied successful speakers to learn their techniques.

 

The IIT Roorkee Stage: Facing the Ultimate Fear:

Stepping onto the IIT Roorkee stage was daunting. But I remembered my journey. I took a deep breath and began sharing my story. I was authentic, and that resonated with the audience.

 

The Mind Blank Moment (Again!):

Even at IIT Roorkee, my mind went blank for a few seconds. But this time, I was prepared. I paused, collected my thoughts, and continued. This taught me how to avoid mind blank during a speech in India.
