I still remember the moment I decided to step into the world of content creation back in 2020. I didn’t own a fancy studio or have fantasies of getting viral overnight. All I had was a broken plan, a suspended account, a hostel room with 2 roommates and almost nothing to start with.

When I shared my thoughts with family and friends, I got exactly what I expected: disappointment. This is because no one ever takes content creation as a real career. I only got to hear “Business mein aaja, iss content me kya rakha hai?” But this doesn’t mean I could’ve given up so easily. 

If you are still wondering, “Is content creation a real career in India?” Then, here we go. I’m going to answer everything honestly from the start to the end, so you don’t have to stay confused about your decision.

What People Actually Think About Content Creation?

People outside the life of social media think, “tum sirf videos banate ho, gaano pe nachte ho aur paise chaapte ho.” This is exactly what our society believes. To many people, content creation doesn’t count as a real job because there is no office or a fixed salary. 

But what could be a real career from other people’s perspective? An MBA, an engineering degree, or a government job. Anything else that you do counts as a side activity for them. No one believes that things like content creation could actually bring growth.

You need to believe me, this thinking is already outdated. This thing was built in a world where everyone believed a real career is going to the office and coming back with a fixed salary. The world is moving forward, and you don’t have to believe that a content creation job in India isn’t a real thing, even if it doesn’t match your parents’ thinking.

What Is Content Creation Then?

 If you think content creation is just about posting videos, then you are completely wrong. It’s a real business that can launch you into the world of side businesses beyond 30-second reels. 

Behind this one video, there are a lot of efforts. From scripting and editing to thumbnail strategy, SEO, and understanding how the algorithm is performing. Other than this, you have to negotiate with brands, reply to hundreds of comments and DMs, and carefully review the analytics to see what actually worked. I was constantly adapting, so I don’t end up making a flop of something that worked last month.

When you become a creator, you are not just a face on the internet; you are the main product, marketer, and also the CEO. You are not going to get a strategy immediately. You are the one who has to build the brand, market it, and sell it at the end. Sometimes, it might seem harder than my 9-5 job. Because the audience doesn’t actually believe Sunday is a break. 

Is There Actually Money in Content Creation?

Yes, but I’m not going to give you hope on unreal claims. The harder you work on yourself, the more you can earn, and it won’t be a fixed salary. But anyway, I’m gonna give you a rough estimation of what you can earn as a content creator.

• Nano creators (5K–50K followers): ₹2,000–₹15,000 per post
• Micro creators (50K–200K followers): ₹15,000–₹80,000 per post
• Mid-tier creators (200K–1M followers): ₹80,000–₹5 lakh per post

Apart from this, there are also UGC Creators. This User-Generated Content takes shape without you having to post on your own page. If you need a serious creator income in India, you have to work on 3-4 things at once, not rely on just one.

But is it guaranteed? If I’m honest, nothing is guaranteed. Companies and industries also shut down, jobs are hard to get, and your degree might not always lead to the best opportunities. Even content creation can be risky, but it has the potential for real growth.

Why I Started Content Creation?

I forgot to mention the real thing. Before all of this, I had a community on Telegram. Here, I used to guide people on everything about Cybersecurity, how to make real money, and understand the latest trends on tech stuffs. It wasn’t a huge deal for me, but it earned me the pocket money I really needed.

The shocking turning point in my life was COVID, when everything ended. I got scammed, my account got suspended, and everything finished within seconds. I still remember the night I sat and thought, “What now?” The answer was hidden in the skills I had. 

I decided to rebuild one thing I was good at: Cybersecurity. I started sharing cybersecurity tips on Instagram because that was the only thing that I knew.  Again, I also started sharing about tech stuff. I had nothing fancy, just a 150rs Mic and some video editing trial tools. 

Slowly, the miracle took place. I reached 50k followers on my Instagram. This was the point where I decided to reveal my face. It was something that I was afraid of, but I found my audience was coming back to me.

To be honest, I feel everything really started when I found myself ending. I only followed what I knew, and I achieved success in everything I built. And I’m proud of the person I was in the past, who didn’t give up.

Is Content Creation For Everyone?

Honestly, I would say no. Because I personally feel people take it as “anyone can do it,” rather than knowing what it is really about. You can’t just jump into something that you know nothing about.

It is for people who enjoy creating content, learning, gaining knowledge, and taking in everything the path has to offer. If you are someone who likes the idea of being seen, then you are not the one. If you love writing, editing, filming, and teaching something valuable, you are all set to jump in.

It’s not for someone who wants quick fame or money. In the start, the first 6-12 months are entirely tough. Very little income and a lot of self-doubt. Still, I never chose to give up and continued what my heart truly desired.
